The proper tactic to weight (body fat) loss

Hi everyone!

I’m Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition and physical fitness for diabetics. I’ve written over three dozen blogs covering various aspects of diabetes including symptoms, monitoring, explaining glycaemic index, carbohydrate counting, and correlation between body weight, lifestyle and diabetes and so on.

Very often I have clients who walk into my clinic who have had less than friendly encounters with either over-enthusiastic health workers or plain insensitive health professionals who approach patient health issues in too cavalier a fashion. Rectifying the damage requires time on my part and willingness to revisit the problem on the part of the client.

Excess weight is instantly visible and often evokes snide remarks. That apart, excess weight also has adverse health consequences. However, the silver lining is that, the amount of weight you need to lose to regain control over your health is much less than you think. Every single pound of weight you lose is that much less pressure on your internal organs and your heart. So every pound you lose not only makes you feel better, your internals rejoice too.

Health professionals unnecessarily scare off patients by setting a target for type 2 diabetes weight loss. Not only are such targets unnecessary, they are usually unrealistic and when the patient fails to achieve the target, depression can set in. To all my clients I say, it doesn’t really matter how much you lose. Every pound of weight you lose is a gain to your self-esteem and your health. I compare weight loss to a snow ball. As the ball rolls down the hill it gets bigger. You start off by losing just one pound at a time. The difference in your physical appearance itself will encourage you to maintain your diet and exercise regime. Pretty soon you will be a changed person. Keep it simple. It really works.

You start off by being specific on what you wish to achieve and set yourself a realistic goal that takes into account the amount of time you can devote and any other factor that you feel might interfere in achieving your weight losing programs goals. You are human – Be forgiving. Even dieticians such as me give in to the occasional pastry or ice cream or even burgers. Remember most food is not bad – you just need to ‘exercise them off’. If you have received an invitation for a birthday party, don’t ambush your stomach. Instead speak to it; tell it that you are going to enjoy the party today but warn it that you will have to work it off over the next three days. Trust me; your stomach will secrete a larger quantity of gastric juices to help you digest your favorite foods. Your body is more accommodating that you can ever imagine (if it weren’t, the human race would have been extinguished a million years ago).
